The fact that the festival is free and features many artists, both established and upcoming, the line-up is appealing enough to get people interested. It beats the developing trend around town of over priced festivals that do not even offer value for money.

Fete de la Musique diverted most of Gaborone residents’ routes to Botswanacraft on Saturday as it managed to attract a very large entertainment -hungry crowd. People braved the winter chill to attend the festival.

However, despite the massive turnout, the event turned out to be a bore. Poor sound quality contributed to things falling apart, as  did dead moments. The transition between bands wasn’t smooth and left the crowd hanging for long intervals. The event also recycled MC’s from last year’s event. With the amount of talent in Botswana, new faces could have made for a much more interesting line-up.

This year marked the 12th edition of the event being hosted in Botswana courtesy of Alliance Francaise de Gaborone. Also known as World Music Day, Fete de la Musique  is an annual music festival taking place on June 21, in cities around the world. It first took place in 1982 after being launched by the French Ministry for culture.

Ever since, the festival has become an international phenomenon, celebrated on the same day in more than 460 cities and countries, including Germany, Italy, Egypt, Syria, Morocco, South Africa, Australia, Vietnam, Congo, Cameroon, Mauritius, Fiji, Colombia, Chile, Nepal, United States and Japan, to name a few.

Fete de la Musique is open to any participant (amateur or professional musicians) who wants to perform.. This  allows the expression of all styles of music in a cheerful atmosphere.
