She said that the vandals have turned the school compounds into their bedrooms, toilets, and brothels. “We always find filthy things such as condoms and other things in the classrooms.  At times we find human stool in some of the classrooms. The cleaners find these things to be too much to bear and sometimes they refuse to clean up the mess,” she said.

Letebele said that apart from human faces having become a common sight in the schools they also find condoms and abandoned blankets left for pupils and teachers to discover.

The situation came to light at a meeting at Tswaragano Primary School, one of the two affected schools at Old Naledi.  Letebele went as far as accusing some of the residents of not being protectors of the schools but rather delinquents who have worn the fences down from use as washing lines.  Moreover they have realised that because of use by some residents there are shuttered windows and doors as a result.

She said that the schools’ toilets have been vandalised to the point that children do not know where to go when nature calls.  She said that even though the schools had tried hard to maintain all the damages it has not bore any fruits as the residents kept on coming back to vandalise the school further. Letebele also expressed disappointment over parents in the community who give their children cellphones to charge at the schools saying that it keeps pupils from taking their academics seriously as they log onto social networks during lessons.
