Walking a tight rope: Diphatsa's future has not been decided

The Francistown side faces dissolution after its backers, BDF decided to pullout as its cuts its involvement with sports clubs.

Diphatsa has requested that it should be allowed to exist and play in the league even without the support of BDF. The club has played a handful of games in the new season before it was sidelined.

BVF was scheduled to meet last night to discuss the matter. The process of allowing institutional clubs to become community teams takes time.  BVF vice president, George Keotsene said they decided to meet after realising that the issue will take time to be resolved. “The information that we got from BDF sports director was that the issue would be resolved in a short time. But we have since realised that is not the case hence the need to map the way forward,” Keotsene said.

He said they thought the team would be independent by now with a new committee in place. He lamented that it was unfortunate that they did not know about BDF’s decision vis-à-vis Diphatsa until it was implemented. “When they reduced teams last year, we did not know that it was a continuous exercise,” he added.

BDF sports director, Montwedi Simon told Mmegi Sport yesterday that they have entered the second phase of shedding sports teams. Efforts to get a comment from Diphatsa officials were futile as they referred Mmegi Sport to their superiors in Gaborone.

Volleyball fans will follow the developments keenly as Diphatsa has been a consistent performer over the years. Diphatsa men’s side has won all their four games this season. The female team has won once in three outings.
