Seven women Parly candidates for BCP

“We are the only party that has made it to this number while others failed to do so. We are going to assist these women to ensure that they win constituencies that they are contesting in. More women will also come up in the 2019 elections,” he said.

The seven women are party chairman Motsei Rapelana (Gaborone North), Dr Habaudi Hobona (Francistown West), Tiny Kojane (Mmathete-Molapowabojang), Annah Motlhagodi (Gaborone Bonnington North), Mariah Molebatsi-Kusasa (Tati East), Daisy Bathusi (Boteti East) and Masego Motswakhumo (Serowe North).

The ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) has four women parliamentary candidates while the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC), which is still to finalise the fielding of candidates, has three so far.

On other issues, Saleshando said they have 54 parliamentary candidates after the withdrawal of Shashe West constituency candidate Nthusi Chimbisi.  He said they are in the process of selecting a candidate for the constituency.  “The reason why Chimbisi had withdrawn is because he wants to further his studies whilst employed. I can confirm that he is still our member,” he said.

Saleshando said they would be finishing the launch of their parliamentary and council candidates in mid August.  The BCP leader added they would be holding the party conference during July holidays at Ledumang Senior Secondary School. On the table will be, among other things, the final election lap and party constitution review, Saleshando said.

Saleshando also announced private attorney Martin Dingake as the chief spokesperson for the party presidency. Dingake is also the BCP Youth League spokesperson. He is also one of the BCP lawyers.  The BCP further said it had translated its party manifesto into Ikalanga, Sesobea and Sekgalagadi languages.

“Our members had volunteered to help the party with translation of the manifesto into their languages,” he said.
