Peace and good governance crucial Motlanthe

“The concepts of peace and good governance are not just important for Africa’s development but indispensable. This is all the more reason the youth’s location in the sphere of peace building and contributing to good governance is of exceptional importance,” he said.

Motlanthe said this at the Sir Ketumile Masire Foundation fundraising dinner at GICC on Friday. He said good governance strives to minimise the scourge of corruption and takes on board all views, including those of political minorities. He said if young people are to make a difference in running public affairs in a clean and effective way, their levels of education would need to be commensurate with the demands of the task.  He said the youth of Africa will need to receive good quality education in areas such as public administration to equip them with the necessary intellectual tools to measure up to the demands of running modern public institutions and systems to achieve set objectives.

“It is equally true, as history has proven all over the world, across time, that peace and good governance are at once the preconditions for and the fulcrum of social development and economic growth,” he stated.

The theme of the fundraiser was ‘Peace and Good Governance With Focus On Youth’.

Motlanthe applauded the Masire Foundation for its good work, explaining that such establishments are important in every society. He said strengthening NGOs like Sir Ketumile Masire Foundation can benefit Botswana, by empowering them through programmes, which include leadership training for youth. He said he trusts the foundation will continue to get a steady inflow in funding. As a non-profit organisation, he said the foundation can only execute its duties if sufficiently funded.
