Road mishap claims one life

The acting commander of Central Police Station, Edward Leposo told Mmegi that a Toyota Corolla taxi and Toyota Hilux 2.7 were involved in the accident. The deceased was the driver of the taxi. His passenger, together with the female driver of the Hilux, were rushed to hospital with injuries.

“The taxi was coming from the direction of the town and was heading north while the Hilux was entering the city. We do not know yet what could have caused the accident as investigations are still ongoing and we cannot disclose the name of the deceased because we are yet to notify the family,” said Leposo said. The injured were still admitted at Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital by yesterday. Leposo said that though accidents along the Francistown–Ramokgwebana Road have declined significantly, this is the second fatal mishap this year.

He said there is a lot of livestock along the road. “We have been warning drivers about cattle and wild animals on this road and pleading with them to drive with caution. We often make sure that we put up roadblocks and set speed traps for drivers to reduce the speed along this road, “ he said.

Leposo said the situation is worsened by the fact that currently, the roadside is bushy. This makes it hard for drivers to spot animals on the side of the road. Such animals can cross the road anytime, catching motorists by surprise. “We call on drivers to reduce speed when driving at night so that they can be prepared to avoid whatever may come their way,” Leposo said.
