Lekone finished first in the Professionals category at the Khawa event. He told Mmegi Sport that this goes to show that he is in good shape for the popular 1000 Desert Race.

“I know the terrain at 1000 Desert Race will be different to the one at Khawa, but the fact that I managed to perform there shows I have been preparing well,” he said.  Lekone will compete in the 1000km and 500km, which are organised by Gaborone Motor Club at the Desert Race.

He finished third in the 500 kilometres last year, despite ending the first day of the event at position one. “I had a setback in the second day when my bike lost an exhaust pipe. That is why I ended up finishing third,” he explained.

Lekone will once again use the 700cc bike he acquired last year courtesy of Botswana Post and the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Culture. The bike is said to cost around P69,000 in its standard form and around P115,000 after the inclusion of extras like performance pipe, suspensions and arms.

Lekone thanked Engen Bontleng for the support they have given him in the past four years. Engen Bontleng has been providing him with fuel during the race for the race in a relationship that turns five this year.
