Sponsored by asset management company, Afena Capital with support from Botswana Confederation of Commerce Industry and Manpower (BOCCIM) and Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA), the club was officially launched by Trade and Industry minister Dorcas Makgato-Malesu.

Speaking at the launch, Afena managing director Bakang Seretse said that the business press club would serve as a vehicle to bridge the gap between the worlds of media reporting and business and also to give more public insight.  “This was also in recognition that the media has a vibrant role to play in promoting business and the economic development of our country. We hope to work together to improve the level of business journalism in the country. “As Afena, we have pledged to sponsor monthly conferences where experts will be invited to present on a variety of economic topics and interact with the media,” he said.

The Afena Press Club conferences will be held on the last Tuesday of every month.

For her part, Makgato-Malesu said that the Press Club would provide a platform for businesses and media to engage on issues that will contribute the positive economic development of the country.

“It is my hope that all the key players will benefit greatly from these press club events.

“Although there are signs of some level of improvement in business reporting in the country, we can do much better. Journalists should learn to get their facts and figures right and not mix them up. Let us strive to do our best and not just scratch on the surface but we must have the capacity to go indepth in our reporting,” she said.

Established in 2012, Afena Capital Botswana is a partnership of  South African and Batswana investment professionals.

The management team comprises Seretse, Alphonse Ndzinge and Sharifa Noor.
