Three die in Palapye bus crash

Yesterday, Palapye police told Mmegi that of the 38 people on board the bus, three were certified dead at Palapye Primary Hospital, while eight sustained serious injuries. Another 21 passengers were treated for minor injuries while the rest, who included the driver, escaped unharmed.

The traffic officer at Palapye Police Station, Assistant Superintendent, Robert Mmese said the incident happened about four kilometres from the spot where a Seabelo Bus had an accident late last year.

He appealed to members of the public to come forward and identify two of the deceased whose remains are at the hospital.

“We still do not know the names of the two of the deceased men and we appeal to those who know their relatives were travelling, to come and assist us,” he said.

Of the eight seriously injured passengers, two have been referred to Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital in Francistown. Another two have been referred to Mahalapye Primary Hospital.

Mmese appealed to public transport operators to drive carefully and comply with the stipulated speed limits. He urged farmers to look after their livestock. He said while police do their best to drive beasts away from the roads, their efforts are defeated by the lack of cooperation from farmers.
