“Around 300 million people watched the Games around the world,” Serufho said at a media briefing in Gaborone yesterday. The second edition of the Games was held in Gaborone from May 22 to 31.

Serufho lauded the media, saying it played a big part in publicising the Games and attracting good support. Even less known sports like fencing attracted good crowds. Serufho said both local and international media ensured that Botswana is known to the world.

He admitted that there was poor communication during the Games and this would be improved in future.

He said preparations for the games were hectic considering the short notice Botswana got to become hosts. “It was a rollercoaster, but it is an experience that I would personally not trade for anything,” he said. Serufho believes they successfully hosted the Youth Games despite doubts from other countries. He said when the country put a bid to host the Games, some countries had doubts considering the small population of Botswana.

On a sad note, Serufho announced that one of the volunteers died during the Games. He said it was unfortunate that such a young life was lost and sent his condolences to the family. The volunteer died in an event not related to the Games.
