We just want to be a special member of the association,” BPL chief executive officer, Bennett Mamelodi said at the BPL general assembly last Saturday.

He said they looked at the German Bundesliga, English Premier League and South African Premier Soccer League (PSL) models as an inspiration to acquire autonomy.

The BPL is planning to table a motion at the forthcoming BFA general assembly to get more powers to run its own affairs.  Among others, the BPL wants to negotiate and conclude its own contracts and pursue professionalism more vigorously. Under the current set up, the BFA has the final say in all matters concerning the BPL.

In the quest for autonomy, BPL has drafted its own statutes, which were adopted by delegates at its general assembly.

The statutes will be forwarded to the BFA before the association’s general assembly. The first draft is said to have been endorsed by the BFA legal advisor, Onkagetse Pusoentsi.

Meanwhile, the BPL will hold the league’s awards ceremony tonight at Gaborone International Convention Centre (GICC).

Otlantshekela Mooketsi (BDF XI), Patrick Kaunda (FC Satmos) and Mwampule Masule (Township Rollers) will compete for the player of the season award. Kaunda has since joined South African Premier Soccer League side, Platinum Stars. The former FC Satmos striker was the BPL top scorer. Madinda Ndlovu and China Mading are lined up for the coach of the season contest.
