“The coach will be appointed in the next two weeks,” Jerome Alabu, the BRU secretary general told Mmegi Sport.

He declined to name those in the running and whether BRU was impressed with Mhonda’s performance. He said the new officials are yet to study Mhonda’s performance report prepared by the previous committee. “We will interrogate the previous committee’s report in order to make our own informed judgment before appointing the head coach,” he said. He said a number of factors would be taken into consideration.

Alabu said the team has international assignments in the next months, which necessitates the appointment of a coach.

Mhonda said the fact that he led the side last year does not necessarily put him ahead in the race. A source close to BRU said although the union is not willing to discuss and confirm that Mhonda will be reappointed, the Zimbabwean-born Vultures eighth man is likely to continue from where he left last season.

BRU is generally impressed with the achievements made by the former Prince Edward High School lock, a source said.

Mhonda, who now holds a Level II coaching qualifying took over the women side when the team was only playing Sevens rugby.
