Yesterday, the suspended members told Mmegi that they heard rumours to that effect, but they have not yet been served with the letters. BDP secretary general Mpho Balopi refused to discuss the matter and referred enquiries to the executive secretary Sechele Sechele, who was not available for comment.

Yesterday’s drastic decision comes just two weeks after some NYEC members toppled their chair, Andile Boatile accusing him of having been party to a unilateral decision by the central committee to postpone the youth elective congress.  The meeting, held at Tsholetsa House without the chair and four of the 18 member committee, replaced Boatile with Riggert Moroka.  But the party central committee did not approve the decision.

The BDP youth’s 20th elective congress was supposed to be held by the end of last month at Masunga Senior Secondary School, but the party leadership postponed it with just a week to go. Disgruntled NYEC members then accused Boatile of having been party to the decision, among many other charges.

A report prepared by a NYEC member for the central committee stated that Boatile had not submitted a single report from the central committee, where he represents the youth.

“NYEC members usually hear about vital central committee decisions through social media platforms instead of the chairperson who sits on the central committee,” the report reads. It further states that, “the chairperson has hence been inefficient in his duties as per Rule 9 which discusses the duties of a chairperson”.
