Gaborone 2014

Botswana beat Zimbabwe in netball opener

In the first quarter, Botswana struggled to keep up with the marauding Zimbabweans.

At some point, they trailed 6-1, but the introduction of Boikanyo Selogetso at goal shooter saw them come back strongly in the second quarter.

The third quarter was equally intriguing with both teams taking turns to score and were separated by just one goal.

Botswana took full control of the game in the final quarter, and opened a four-goal lead.

The Zimbabweans came back strongly towards the end of the quarter and drew level.

But Botswana's Selogetso scored to thrust the hosts forward.

Zimbabwe captain Sharon Bwanali had an opportunity to draw level in the last minute but missed from close.

Straight after her miss, the umpire blew the whistle to end the game.

Bwanali said: 'This is not the end of the tournament for us, I am sure we will do well in out other games and we hope to meet Botswana again.'

Botswana's goal defender Sarona Hans said it was a tough match and is confident they will win a medal.

'This was probably the toughest game we will play in this tournament I believe we will come out with something from these games.'
