According to the outgoing national chairperson Othusitse Tsalaile, they have already paid a P4 million deposit to develop the land.

The building, which is allocated on plot 54354, is expected to be built with funds that will be collected from their members, fund raising and sponsors.

“We do not have any sponsor on board at the moment, that is why all members need to take part in this construction as it will benefit all of them at the end,” Tsalaile said during the ground breaking ceremony on Wednesday. The four-story building will be constructed on an 898 square metres plot and is expected to be completed in August 2015.

Currently the Union has invested in seven plots, five of which are in Gaborone, one in Lobatse and the other one in Francistown.

Tsalaile also noted that Time Projects will construct the building. Time Projects also have helped the BMU attain two floors at the Morojwa Mews Building in the CBD which they are leasing.

The Union currently has about 42,257 members 32,000 of which are central government workers while the rest are from the 15 parastatals.

Every month each member contributes P20, which accords them the newly introduced funeral cover of P20,000 as well as the retirement package.

The CBD is currently a hive of activity with various buildings under construction, including the Barclays Plaza and the Zambezi Towers.

Among the buildings that were completed last year are First National Bank’s new headquarters and sectional title schemes including Twin Towers, Morojwa and Mowana Mews, and the second phase of PrimeTime’s own Prime Plaza.

Recently completed buildings include Masa Centre, Exponential Building, the High Court and the first phase of the Prime Plaza.
