Police nab Maun diesel theft suspects

The Maun Police Station commander, Superintendent Kenny Badumetse has said the suspects are expected to appear in court tomorrow.  The police believe that the men both aged 28 are part of a larger gang that has been stealing diesel from the generators over the years.

They hope the arrest will be a breakthrough in getting other members of the gang. Badumetse said that for many years, shortage of water in Maun has been mainly caused by theft of diesel from the WUC generators. He explained that the generators usually ran out fuel a day or two after they are filled-up leading to breakdowns. He said the police decided enough was enough and launched a raid to catch the fuel thieves after the generators had been filled with diesel.

The raid at boreholes nabbed two men, who had pumped an estimated 50 litres of diesel from the generators.  “After the WUC officials filled up the generators, our officers raided the area. They caught two men who had pumped the diesel from the generators,” Badumetse said.

Meanwhile the police in Maun are set to hold a campaign against rape from May 23-27. The main speaker is expected to be the Commissioner of Police, Keabetswe Makgophe.
