Ntuane was addressing members of the various teams at Mma Masire Grounds and Bophirima Primary School on May 18, 2014.
A statement from his office, issued yesterday, says Ntuane informed players and team officials that the opposition parties have stated in the past, and in forums such as parliament, that constituency tournaments are a waste of money and President Ian Khama’s populist project and resources committed to them can be better utilised elsewhere.
Ntuane left the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) in 2010 to form the Botswana Movement for Democracy (BMD), later returning to the BDP in 2012. In the statement he alleged that if voted into power the opposition would cancel the tournaments, thereby leaving young people without any source of recreation.
“The popular tournaments are also meant to keep young people from socials ills such as drinking and crime,” said the statement.
It is stated that Ntuane told those in attendance that the opposition has not stated what it will put in place for the constituency tournaments. At the same meeting he donated playing balls to 37 football, 20 volleyball and 10 netball teams respectively. The number of registered players in the Bonnington South constituency is approximately 1,300.
Ntuane encouraged all team members to register for elections in view of the fact that Sunday was the final day set aside for the exercise. The Team registering the most voters was set to receive a goat as its prize.
Further due to complaints by Sunday football teams that they are not supported, the MP also donated playing balls to 19 teams to enable them to honour their fixtures and also maintain their fitness through positive activity.
