The Botswana Africa Youth Games Organising Committee (BAYGOC) chief executive officer, Tuelo Serufho said tight security will be provided to the 2,500 athletes from 53 countries that will be participating in the Games.

“We have had meetings with the Botswana Police Service (BPS), Botswana Defence Force (BDF) and the Directorate of Intelligence and Services (DIS) discussing about the security levels which will be maintained during that period,” Serufho said.

He stated that there will be tight security at every event and the public and the media are not allowed at the athletes’ village at the University of Botswana.

“The village camp is a highly restricted area. Members of the public are not allowed to interact with athletes,” he said.

The police spokesperson, Chris Mbulawa said they are prepared for the upcoming Games and will provide tight security.

“We have certain arrangements that we have made with the Games organisers. The message that I can give to the visitors who will be coming for the Africa Youth Games is that Botswana is a safe country, therefore they should feel safe,” he said. Teams from participating countries have been trooping in since Friday.
