Makgophe threatens media over hit list

The list, containing names of people to be assassinated, was first mentioned at the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) political rally held towards the end of April in Gabane. 'May it be noted that in future, such disturbing statements could lead to possible prosecution in terms of Section 59 of the Penal Code, Chapter 08:01 of the Laws of Botswana which makes it a criminal offence for any person to publish any false statement, rumour or report which is likely to cause fear and alarm to the public or to disturb the peace,' Makgophe warned in a statement yesterday.
The police boss stated that following the recent allegations about the list, the police conducted investigations and found nothing. 'It is hereby announced to the general public that the Botswana Police Service has concluded investigations into the veracity of these allegations and found that they are devoid of any truth. The utterances were about an alleged hit list containing names of the leadership of the UDC. We would therefore like to take this opportunity to allay any fear or anxiety that could have been created by these allegations,' said Makgophe.
He cautioned political parties and candidates vying for positions in the forthcoming general elections to refrain from making statements that could cause panic and unwarranted anxiety. 'This is a position that was communicated by the Commissioner of Police to representatives of all political parties at a meeting held in Gaborone on February 28, 2014 to discuss amongst others, issues relating to preparations for the general elections,' he said. He appealed for cooperation and calm during the build-up to the general elections.
