The organisor of the beauty contest Dineo Matlapeng revealed that Miss Grand originates from Thailand and was founded in 2013 by Nawat Itsaragrislp with the aim of promoting World Peace.

Thirteen women will be competing for the title in the Botswana version.

“We decided to join the movement as we saw it as a good initiative. The purpose of this prestigious pageant is to bring the message of peace and harmony to all the corners of our country,” she said.

She said they recently held auditions for aspiring beauty queens where they choose 13 women they felt fitted the requirements they were looking for.

“We wanted women between the ages of 17-25 who are confident and informed in current affairs,” she said.

She noted that the pageant would inspire the women to be the best they can be in everything they do.

“We want to encourage them to be the best role models who can change people’s lives and make a difference in everything they do.

After all it is our responsibility to make the world we live in a better place.

The pageant will help promote a Motswana woman and give her an amazing opportunity to act as a peace ambassador on behalf of Batswana on the international stage,” she said.

She added that their main hope is to end all forms of gender-based violence, conflicts and hostility.

“The queen will embark on a project of her choice where she is expected to touch lives.  We believe whoever will win will represent our country perfectly not only here but also in Bangkok, Thailand from September 16 to October 7,” she said.

Matlapeng mentioned that people can vote for their favourite contestant on their Facebook page ‘Miss Grand International Botswana’ at https://www.facebook.com/MISSGRAND INTERNATIONAL.

“We decide to use Facebook as a platform to promote the pageant and the women as people are more active.  We also want to involve the public in choosing a deserving queen.

I would like to encourage people to visit the page and vote for their favourite contestant to help her secure a place in the top six,” she said.

Matlapeng emphasised that it is important to involve the public, explaining that different countries would be bringing their ambassadors who will represent the country well.

She said it is important for Batswana to help choose the young woman they feel deserves the title.

“Batswana should help us choose our queen, one who will represent us well.

Miss Grand Botswana is not just a pageant; it has meaning and significance.

We are a pageant with a cause for Peace and Tranquillity and the winner should be prepared to represent these features,” she said.
