The awards, which are a partnership between CNN International and MultiChoice are open to African journalists who report on issues affecting Africa.

MultiChoice Botswana Communication Executive, Tshepo Maphanyane, said entries to the competition differ, explaining that there was a point when interest amongst local journalists was high, and years when the entries dropped.

Maphanyane added she could not state in figures how many entries are expected because journalists are at liberty to submit their works themselves.  Furthermore, she urged editors to encourage journalists to enter for the competition that she termed as life changing.

“Batswana journalists are not eager to enter the competition as compared to their counterparts in Africa as a whole but the awards have the potential to change people lives”, she said.

She expressed that even if one does not win, they stand a better chance as a nominee for workshops and to meet top media personnel from Africa and internationally.

Entries to the competition this year can be conveniently accessed by journalists at http://www.cnnmcaja.cnn.com.

The Awards have different categories which include Culture, Environment, MSD Health & Medical, Mohamed Amin Photographic, Press Freedom, The Coca-Cola Company Economics & Business Awards and Francophone General News Awards – Electronic Media & Print as well as Portuguese Language General News Awards - Electronic Media & Print. New categories include GE Energy & Infrastructure and the News Impact Award.
