On why the money was recorded as a loan, Masters said: “The young lad in the office made a mistake, I did not know anything about it until it was brought to my attention. It is actually a repayment of a loan. It was a mistake which is being suitably acknowledged,” Masters said.

The issue is reported to have caused divisions at a BFA National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting last week with some officials questioning why the money was recorded as a loan.

Babitseng has said the reports about a loan he is refusing to pay are part of a plot to malign him. He said he was recovering money, which he lent the BFA last year when he was acting CEO.

“BFA has no money, so at some point, I used my personal money to fuel the association’s cars and the P2,000 I received was reimbursement for the money I used. When I received that payment, I was actually on suspension - how would BFA give an advance or loan to a suspended person?” he asked. He said he does not know why the reimbursement was recorded as a loan. “I never saw what was written on it (payment slip), I do not know how that mistake was made.”

This is not the first time Babitseng has been in the middle of claims of financial impropriety. He was once suspended over allegations of failing to account for money he received from the Algerian Football Association. Recently, the police wrote a letter to Masters requesting information about the case. Babitseng says this is part of efforts by detractors to bring him down
