School term disrupts Youth Games training

Raphutshe said most of the athletes are students who have gone back to school after the start of the second term.

The students are now being trained by teachers. Raphutshe said this is not good enough because in most cases, the teachers are not trained coaches.

Since there is no monitoring while student athletes are in school, he said they never get reports on their progress.

Botswana will field 32 competitors on athletics - eight boys and eight girls.

The squad has promising athletes, but the disruption in the training schedule is likely to affect their medal prospects.

Raphutshe would not state the target, but he is confident of medals in the 200m, 400m and high jump.

The team has some fine athletes like 100m sensation, Galefele Moroko who was recently crowned the junior female athlete of the year at the Botswana National Sports Council (BNSC) awards. Promising 17-year-old sprinter, Baboloki Thebe is a medal hopeful in 200m and 400m.

He won two gold medals at the just ended Confederation of School Sports Associations of Southern Africa (COSSASA) Games.
