BCP suspends constituency launches

The party made the decision so as to concentrate on campaigning to get members to use the second supplementary registration to register for the October general elections.

The supplementary registration is expected to start from May 1, and end on May 18.  In a well attended and successful manifesto launch at the Maruapula grounds on Saturday, the BCP officially unveiled party president and Gaborone Central parliamentary candidate, Dumelang Saleshando, his team and others from 54 constituencies around the country.

Yesterday, the party spokesperson Taolo Lucas told Mmegi that the constituency launches would start on May 24 until August 10.

“We expect all of our candidates to be launched by August 10,” he said, adding that officiating at these launches will be anyone of the top four executive members - Saleshando, the secretary general Dr Kesitegile Gobotswang, party chairperson Motsei Rapelana or Lucas. 

Lucas also revealed that the BCP will hold a conference on President’s Day in July, where the keys issues will be major concentration on election preparations, constitutional review in order to modernise it.

On Saturday, Saleshando told his members that they will be contesting in 54 of the 57 available parliamentary seats.

“In terms of the Electoral Laws, we need to win at least 29 of the 54 constituencies that we will be contesting for to form the next government. This is a task that the BCP leadership has set itself to achieve. We are in this contest for the trophy, not for anything else. This will require us to redouble our efforts and deliver victory in as many of the wards as possible,” he said.

He said their party has grown in leaps and bounds and it is for them to lead the party to the presidential seat.
