However, there was not that much of a hype indicating that indeed it was the last day of registration. Almost all the polling stations the Monitor visited had no one coming to register. Most of the polling officers were either deep asleep or chatting among themselves. The polling officers said that usually more people came in the evening after knocking off from work.
Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) public relations officer (PRO) Osupile Maroba said that the IEC has managed to achieve its target number because in the first registration alone, which ended on March 31, they managed to register more than 70,000 voters.
Maroba said people who were unable to register before had been making use of the extended registration period. He also stated that they analyse the registrations on a weekly basis; and for the week between May 16-23 the number of people registered was 30,265. The following week the number rose to 37,690. He said that they have not yet analysed the registrations for the week May 31-June 5.
