Montsho Wins Top Sports Award

Earlier, the former world champion had beaten Boikhutso Mudongo of chess and karate’s Thato Malunga to the sportswoman of the year award.

Montsho is a winner of the Diamond League and is a silver medalist at the IAAF track and field championships. She is ranked number one in 400m in the world.

In other categories, rising track star, Galefele Moroko was crowned the junior female athlete of the year ahead of last year’s winner, Naomi Ruele of swimming and karate’s Tsholofelo Maduma.

Moroko became a household name last year when she won gold at the Confederation of School Sport Association of Southern Africa (COSSASA) championships in Zimbabwe.

She also won a bronze medal at the First Africa Youth Championships in Nigeria.

Moroko was named the most valuable performer in Czech Republic after winning gold at the International Schools World Championships in 400m. She has also qualified for the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games.

Sensational karateka, Khaya Groth is the junior male athlete of the year, beating David Van De Cloff of swimming and Innocent Tidimane of tennis. Alister Walker who is ranked 15th in world squash beat Oteng Oteng of boxing and Moses Jones of karate to the sportsman of the year award.

Chess arbiter, Kelapile Kelatlhilwe scooped the umpire/referee of the year award ahead of Hlanganani Digwere of boxing and Union Kgafela of karate. Karate’s George Tshikare beat Thebe Setlalekgosi and Gaone Modise in the contest for coach of the year.
