Police on Friday sealed off a large stretch of the busy Nelson Mandela Drive, from the Bull and Bush lights to the Old Metro Four Way, after a pedestrian overhead bridge was accidentally destroyed by a North bound machinery truck.

The sealing off of the busy road on Friday and Saturday resulted in heavy traffic congestion on many Gaborone roads as drivers tried to find alternative routes to the North and South of the city.

The road is also used by taxis and motorists to and from the western sides of the city such as Broadhurst Industrial, Block 3, Block 8 just to name a few.

Broadhurst Police Station commander Nsala admitted that there was a huge inconvenience on motorists on Saturday with alternative routes failing to contain diverted traffic.

Nsala said the machinery truck caused the bridge to shift from its position resulting in fears that it could collapse on motorists or endanger even the pedestrians’ lives.

More days of frustrations on the road could be on the way for Gaborone motorists if the city council does not move swiftly to fix the bridge.

By Saturday evening the road was still sealed. It was expected that by yesterday engineers would have started work on fixing the bridge but even as late as last night, work had not begun on the bridge even though the road had been opened for use.
