A statement from the National Assembly issued yesterday says another election observer mission to South Africa, that was scheduled to depart tomorrow has been cancelled due to inability by the Southern Africa Development Community Parliamentary Forum (SADCPF) to raise sufficient funds. South African elections will be held on May 7th.

“Whereas National Parliaments pay for the participation of their MPs and Staff Members in the SADC PF Election Observer Missions all the other Secretarial costs relating to MPs and Forum Staff travel, hiring of vehicles, hiring of Conference Venue, and hiring of interpreters and translators are met by the Secretariat through its resource mobilization efforts,” says the statement.

The statement added that; “SADC Parliamentary Forum has unfortunately been unable to moblilise the requisite funds, resulting in the cancellation of the mission”.

Furthermore, the National Assembly says that the cancellation affects all delegations of all SADC member Parliaments and was not motivated by Botswana’s decision not to take part in election observation missions in SADC member countries. The observation mission to Malawi is not affected and will go on as planned.
