Before going for the overall title, she must ward off the challenge of Boikhutso Mudongo from chess and karateka Thato Malunga in the race for sportswoman of the year diadem.
Despite the challengers, the track star’s achievement over the last year suggests she would walk away with the top prize. She topped her specialty in the IAAF Track and Field World Championships, won the Dakar Grand Prix and 15 Diamond League races. She is ranked number one in the world in the 400m.
Her main challenger for the sportsperson of the year title is likely to be Moses Jones. The karateka has won gold in both individual and team kumite in Kofukan International World Championships. He is a Zone VI gold medalist in individual kumite and a semi-finalist at the Commonwealth Karate Championships in Canada.
Botswana Karate Association (BOKA) dominates most nominations, with representation in almost all categories. Karate has nine nominations out of 10. The junior female person of the year award is a contest featuring karateka, Tsholofelo Maduma, athletics rising star, Galefele Moroko and Naomi Ruele of swimming.
Moroko has had a bright year and is a favourite for the title. She has won gold at the Confederation of School Sport Associations of Southern Africa (COSSASA) games. She won another gold medal at the International Schools World Championships in Czech Republic where she was crowned the most valuable performer.
