He said that residents of Mohembo and other villages across the river depend on the ferry to cross over to places such as Maun and have been struggling due to the situation.

Kesupetswe said that the ferry is used to transport residents and their cars across and the situation has affected them badly.

“At the moment they are using a small ferry which is not capable of accommodating many people and cars at once, this has a huge impact on the lives of people who depend on it on a daily basis,” he said.

Villages like Mohembo, Kauxwi, Xakao, Sekondomboro, Ngarange, Mogotlho, Seronga, Gunotsoga, Beetsha, Etsha as well as Gudingwa have been left marooned as they depend on the ferry to cross the Okavango River.

He said that those who are tasked with maintaining the ferry are currently busy trying to fix it to normalise the situation.

Kesupetswe called on members of the public to be patient and not opt to try other methods of crossing the river, which could prove detrimental to their lives.

Meanwhile, Kesupetswe said that they are investigating a case in which two people lost their lives in a car accident on their way to Maun from Francistown in the early hours of Saturday morning.

He said a man and woman aged below 30 years died on the spot when a Land Rover they were travelling in hit a donkey.

“The car carrying four people including the driver, hit a donkey, and rolled over near Chanoga village. The driver and other passenger were seriously injured and are currently hospitalised. The driver was later transferred to Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital whilst the other passenger is still hospitalised at Letsholathebe Hospital,” he said.

In another incident, Kesupetswe said that they are investigating two cases of murder, which occurred over the Easter holidays.  A man and woman both aged between 25 and 30 were stabbed with something sharp and lost their lives on Sunday.

“The incident occurred at Botshabelo and Sedie ward in Maun.  We do not know what could have caused the misunderstanding and investigations are still ongoing,” he said.

Kesupetswe said it appeared there was a misunderstanding between the deceased and their assailants as this happened at a place of entertainment, at night and under the influence of alcohol.

He said they are still investigating the cause of the deaths whilst the suspects are in police custody.
