Letlhakane teens die in car accident

Letlhakane Police Station commander, Superintendent Robert Mack, confirmed the accident in an interview with Mmegi, saying that it occurred around 2pm.

The driver of a Toyota Corolla lost control and overran the teens as they walked on the roadside near Letlhakane Senior Secondary School.

“The three children all belongs to the same family and they were walking by the roadside when they were overrun by the car,” he said.

Mack disclosed that the driver explained that he was following another car that suddenly made a u-turn and whilst trying to avoid it, he hit the children.

“The two deceased’s bodies are still awaiting post mortem whilst investigations are ongoing to find the cause of the accident,” he said.

Apart from the accident, Mack said that motorists drove responsibly during the Easter holidays.  He said that the police were visible on all the roads leading to and from Letlhakane.

“It was not a bad holiday.  There were patrols around the village and the drivers cooperated with the police,” he said. He said that they even patrolled the bars and managed to arrest people who were drinking alcohol in ungazzeted places.

“We charged them between P200 and P600 for that offence,” said Mack.

Three other people were arrested selling Chibuku in their homesteads without licences and were charged between P300 and P700.

Meanwhile, Kutlwano police head of traffic, Superintendent Pelontle Kesupile also disclosed that it was one of the area’s excellent holidays as drivers were cooperative.

“We did not record anything bad at all. It was one of the best holidays. Drivers cooperated well with police officers on the road. I call on them to continue with their cooperation,” said Kesupile.

He said that the police officers were working round the clock patrolling all the roads in and around the city and they did not have fatal accidents.

Kesupile said that they were happy not to record any fatal accident along the A1 and A3 roads, which in the past have claimed many lives.
