The recreational facility that encompasses tennis, volleyball, netball and basketball facilities will serve grassroots sports’ skills development programmes which will cater for children from as young as five years up to out-of-school youth. The mayor also launched a recreational hall that will cater for the town’s youth entertainment which is hoped will curb them from social ills such as drugs and alcohol abuse.

Selebi Phikwe Town Council (SPTC) built the infrastructure at a cost of P 1.2million.

As a model local authority in quality service and infrastructure development the mayor stated that they found it fit to develop the local community facility with the purpose of supporting government initiatives geared towards discouraging the youth from bad practices.

The recreational park was seen as a call for the council to closely collaborate with organisations with the relevant expertise to impart the skills, as well as manage the facility.

‘SPTC is therefore exploring ways in it can work with organisations such as Botswana National Sports Council to adequately ensure that Selebi Phikwe youth benefit from the infrastructure,’ said the deputy mayor.

Botswana Tennis Association was available during the launch and as a highlight of the day’s events they demonstrated basic tennis activities with students from three primary schools taking part.
