According to an insider, President Ian Khama directed secretary general Mpho Balopi during the central committee meeting of April 8, to give the BDP employees an increment consistent with public sector adjustment.  “The President has requested the Secretary General to provide him with a copy of a letter (from the workers to the party chairman) after they had agreed with the treasurer Satar Dada on the percentage of salary increase at the party headquarters,” said the source.

The workers had early this month threatened to boycott the recent special congress and national council, if their demands for salary adjustments are not met. In the letter to the party chairperson and country’s Vice President, Ponatshego Kedikilwe, Tsholetsa House workers wrote of broken promises for salary increment with every public sector increase.

They told the BDP leadership of the disparities that exist in the pay structure, with the lowest workers, receptionist and drivers, earning P1,200 while the executive secretary got P20,000 per month.

They complained that it was almost 10 years since BDP workers salaries have been upgraded.  They told Kedikilwe that the last time they got an increase was when Jacob Nkate was the party secretary general.

Balopi, however, yesterday refused to discuss the latest developments, saying he could not discuss party internal matters with the media, especially those that affect their employees.

“Any issues of salary increase that concern the employee or employer are not for public consumption. I will communicate issues of salary increase with relevant people,” Balopi said.
