Masitara pondeers his political future after his alleged recall

As reported yesterday, a constituency meeting over the weekend recommended to the central committee that Masitara should be recalled for gross misconduct.  A source close to the development says in a subsequent meeting held on Monday that Masitara threatened the party with a legal suit should they continue with their plans to replace him.

“There was a meeting on Monday and Masitara said should the party go ahead and recall him he is going to court,” the source said.

Mmegi has leant that some councillors from the constituency are advocating for the former Botswana National Front Youth League president Kagiso Ntime to replace Masitara.  The group, which comprises of mainly young civic leaders, are said to be motivating for a young and assumedly vibrant politician who can face the president of the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) Duma Boko and Botswana Congress Party (BCP) candidate Anna Motlhagodi.

“We want someone who is sellable to the constituents. Ntime is the right candidate for this constituency as compared to Masitara,” said one of the councillors.

Ntime told Mmegi that is aware of the rumours but the BDP leadership has not yet communicated anything to him. He however, seemed ready to step forward if called to saying he would not refuse a call from the party leadership.

“Truly speaking I did not want to contest for elections. To be honest with you before primary elections five constituencies approached me to stand and I turned them down,” he said.

Efforts to contact Masitara were unsuccessful.

Balopi on the other hand, said they could not disclose publicly the issues that were discussed during the Sunday meeting. He said so many issues were discussed, but no name was proposed to replace Masitara. “As a party we want peace and the issues that were discussed are still before the central committee,” said Balopi.

He also insisted that he was not aware that Masitara is intending to sue in the event he is recalled. But the BDP boss cautioned that the party would not tolerate any indiscipline.
