My Star starlets sent packing

Motlha, Portia and Orapeleng were sent packing with judge Shanti Lo declaring his disappointment in the elimination of one of them.

Motlha has been among the best in this year’s edition.  His ability to control and experiment with his voice made him one of the crowd’s favourites.  Despite that he still failed to garner enough votes to keep him in the running.

However, his lack of commanding stage presence and inability to ‘forcibly’ make the crowd join his chorus might have contributed to his downfall.

His elimination, also rubberstamped by the judges who chose Khumo and Tumisang to remain instead of him, robbed the show of one of the most gifted vocalists.

Clearly distraught, the young man from Kasane fought with emotions as his eyes welled up with tears.

But the same cannot be said of Orapeleng. With a limited vocal ability the only reason some would cheer during his performance would be for the fact that he cajoled the audience. His performance included climbing up and down the stands to engage the crowd. Although his elimination seems to have put a lot of strain on him, Orapeleng declared in his parting words that it was not the end.

“Thank you for your support and I urge you to continue supporting me in other endeavors,” he said. Portia, a good singer, also did not get enough votes to keep her in the competition.

It was perhaps the elimination of such talented performers at the opening of the show that put a damp squib on the night with only few showing brilliance in performance.
