BISA to introduce volleyball libero

Officiating at a teachers’ umpiring clinic held at Mater Spei College recently, Tshume said they have not used the defensive player although it is sanctioned under Federation International of Volleyball (FIVB) rules. A volleyball libero remains in the game at all times and is the only player not limited by rules.

Tshume said they want to introduce a libero to allow players who cannot execute other specialised duties like attacking and setting to express themselves in areas they are competent in.  “A libero is a unique player whose role is to receive and cover up for his teammates. He or she is recognised by the different kit he or she wears in a game. A team is allowed two libero players with one allowed to play at a given time,” he explained.

He said the libero, whose operating area is outside the three-metre space gives attackers time to rest when he or she replaces them every time they are at the back. Volleyball referee, Shaft Chigala encouraged teachers at the workshop to be conversant with the rules and regulations of the game to ensure impartiality. He encouraged the teachers to learn to use hand signals, as they are the main communication tools during games. “It is important to learn how signals are used during a game and how to use them effectively for the smooth running of the game,” he stressed.

Teachers were drilled on the conduct of players and team officials and what decisions to apply for specific misconduct. About 80 teachers from north and north central regions attended the umpiring clinic in readiness for the resumption of BISA ball games in two weeks.
