The departure of the reigning Botswana National Singles Bowls Champion has been termed a body blow to local bowling.

“Cairns has been a pillar for Orapa Bowls Club and Botswana Bowling Association (BBA). His move is a big loss to the game,” said BBA chairperson, Kitso Robert.

Robert said that at the time of his departure, Cairns had served BBA as competition secretary for a substantial period. “Our competitions have of recent become an envy of many in the corporate world,” said Robert. He asserted that bowling has been receiving rave reviews from sponsors.

Besides his administrative skills, Robert said Cairns was a marvel to watch on the greens.

Last November, Cairns represented Botswana at the 2013 World Champion of Champions tournament in Christ Church, New Zealand where he was rated among the top 14 bowlers.

“The fact that he has been competing against the best bowlers in the world was an advantage for Botswana,” said the BBA chairperson.

Robert said Cairns shared the experience and expertise with local bowlers.

“Cairns has been mentoring two youngsters currently in the BBA Under-18 team,” he said. The youngsters are Ofentse Molelekeng and Fred Golatwang.

Efforts to get a comment from Cairns, a nutritionist now based in Cape Town, were futile at the time of going to press.
