BDP members are still trooping out to become mekoko following the controversial party primaries that resulted in an unprecedented number of protests and re-runs. Two days after the party passed the resolution to shun independent candidates at its National Council meeting, two BDP councillors from Mahalapye East constituency have tendered their resignation.

Neo Magowe of Maphashala/Dovedale ward and John Masala of Makwape quit yesterday to become independent candidates in this year’s general elections. Magowe wrote to BDP executive secretary, Sechele Sechele yesterday to announce his decision. He told Mmegi that he resigned because he was unhappy with the way the BDP primary elections popularly known as Bulela Ditswe were conducted.

“I am not scared by what the BDP is saying because I am no longer their member and it does not mean that I will join them after elections. BDP should just address their members without threatening those that had left,” an optimistic Magowe said. He asserted that there is no way the BDP can win the troublesome Mahalapye East constituency. Magowe will do battle with the incumbent MP, Botlogile Tshireletso of the BDP, Ernest Nthobelang of Botswana Congress Party (BCP) and Harry Mothei of Botswana National Front (BNF). Nthobelang is a former ruling party member who resigned two weeks ago to join BCP. Just like Magowe, he had lost the primary elections and his appeal to the BDP was dismissed.

Masala confirmed his resignation from BDP to Mmegi yesterday. The BDP leadership could not be reached for comment at the time of going to press yesterday.
