PASSOBO vice-secretary, Phenyo Makaba, told Mmegi Sport this week that only six out of 26 affiliates have paid up the P400 subscription fees.

He said the explanation they got from the affiliates during their annual general meeting over the weekend was that their members are not making contributions to make the pay subscriptions fees.

Makaba said most members of the affiliates are unemployed and coming up with money is a challenge.

He said PASSOBO is encouraging the affiliates to pay up because the funds are needed to keep the association afloat.

Meanwhile, Makaba said they have named a squad to represent Botswana at the Africa Region Five Games in Zimbabwe in December. The team comprises of 30 athletes, 15 of whom are totally blind. The team will be led by seven officials.

The team was selected during the visually impaired competitions in Mochudi last month.

“The team will be coached locally especially that we are working together with Raj Rathedi, a specialist in athletics for the disabled. He will be tasked with coaching the team. We are hopeful that he will organise experts for the team if the need arises,” said Makaba.

PASSOBO will send two athletes, one totally blind and another partially blind to the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland in July.

Makaba stated that the affiliates had an opportunity to discuss the PASSOBO constitution and they agreed that the executive committee should make some amendments.

However, the committee would have to get back to the members and discuss the amended constitution. Makaba said they want to run the association without leaving the members behind because PASSOBO belongs to them.

He said they have not been informed why PASSOBO has been excluded from fielding athletes in the Africa Youth Games to be hosted by Botswana next month.

The chief executive officer of the game’s organisation committee, Tuelo Serufho was supposed to come to the PASSOBO annual general meeting last weekend to explain the exclusion but failed to show up due to other commitments.

Makaba said PASSOBO intends to announce their stand on the games this week.
