Botswana scales up Youth Games preparations

 

He said things are looking good for  popular and non-conventional sports and athletes have shown in various competitions that they are well drilled. He said karate, boxing, tennis, athletics, table tennis, netball, judo, swimming and volleyball have done exceptionally well at regional competitions in South Africa, Zambia and Cameroon. Part of the athletics team is on camp at Goodhope Senior Secondary School to allow students to train after classes as a way of ensuring synergy in academic and sports performances.

“When staging games of this magnitude, there is no doubt that the focus is on our team to showcase our talent to its maximum best, and our nation to rally behind the team to ensure holistic participation as a nation. These games are a trial of our patriotism,” Sitale said.

Botswana National Olympic Committee (BNOC) marketing and communications manager, Mpho Motlhabane said a measure of success for the team is to leave a legacy for new sports in Botswana and win new supporters.

“We therefore urge Batswana to come to the games and support our young stars during this immensely challenging yet groundbreaking point in their sporting careers.”

Star athletes to watch in the Botswana squad for the games include - Galefele Moroko of athletics; Khaya Groth of karate; Justin Moyo of volleyballp; Brian Makanku of football; swimmer, Naomi Ruele; boxer, Keamogetse Kenosi; Tar Matija of netball; Gavin Mogopa of judo and Motshidisi Remathobi of basketball.
