The Permanent Secretary to the President, Eric Molale, disclosed in a press release yesterday that Venson-Moitoi has been given leave of absence from her ministerial duties. The release said the Serowe South MP has been redeployed on special assignment within the Ministry of Education in a strange cabinet reshuffle that produced a number of acting ministerial appointments.

“Venson-Moitoi has been appointed to undertake a special assignment within the Ministry of Education and Skills Development. This assignment will take effect from April 1, 2014,” said Molale. The Minister of Presidential Affairs and Public Administration, Mokgweetsi Masisi has been appointed to replace Venson-Moitoi in an acting capacity. Keletso Rakhudu joins Patrick Masimolole as the second assistant minister at MoESD as the Permanent Secretary, Grace Muzila, becomes the coordinator, National Aids Coordinating Agency (NACA). The new PS at the Education Ministry is Richard Matlhare.

In other cabinet movements, the Minister of Youth Sport and Culture, Shaw Kgathi has been appointed to act in Masisi’s place as Minister for Presidential Affairs and Public Administration. Nominated MP, Vincent Seretse, has been appointed to act as Minister of Youth, Sport and Culture.

Meanwhile, Molale explained that Venson-Moitoi’s special assignment involves overseeing the development of the Education and Training Sector Strategic Plan of the MoESD. The plan is a collaboration project undertaken in collaboration with international partners. “The purpose of the project is to develop a comprehensive and holistic plan for the education sector, as well as harmonise and prioritise policies,” Molale said. It seeks to factor in issues of performance management and monitoring and evaluation of education sector programmes.

“The importance and magnitude of the assignment is such that it will require the full time attention of Honourable Venson-Moitoi,” Molale explained. Venson-Moitoi could not be reached for comment yesterday as her mobile phone rang unanswered.
