BMC Chief Executive Officer, Dr Tombale Akolang confirmed to Mmegi during an interview that setting up a chain of butcheries is something the organisation is considering, but would not reveal further details on the matter.

However, Tombale said that there are control regularities to be followed, after which he would be able to say more.

Meanwhile, farmers have expressed differing reactions to the news on a local farmers Facebook page. Some people accuse the BMC of ‘killing’ local butcheries, as they do not stand a chance against the parastatal.

Others argue that the BMC has an edge over the local butchers with an already established market outside the country where other local players are not allowed to trade.  Therefore the BMC would be given unfair advantage over other players in the market should the parastatal open butcheries.  Also there is a section that believes that the BMC should be competing with the likes of the Meat Corporation of Namibia (MCN).  MCN is a meat processing and marketing organisation, serving internationally markets on behalf of the Namibian government. Others are of the view that BMC should not be competing against small businesses for an already small market. Furthermore, there are those who are excited at the idea, as the BMC would give them an option for better quality meat.
