BIUST, which has been housed at Oodi College of Applied Arts (OCAAT), moves to its Palapye premises in May.

President of the Student Representative Council (SRC), Tumisang Letlakana said at a farewell ceremony in Oodi on Saturday that Batswana should understand that the institution was still in its infancey and the results could not be instantly felt.

“Both students and management understand the purpose for which BIUST was established and both want to make sure that it achieves its set goals. But people should be patient because scientific changes need time,” Letlakana said.

Director of Students Affairs Haniso Motlhabane said among other things BIUST was aiming to demystify the ‘myth’ about mathematics and science.

“We have a programme targeted at young primary school students where we go out to the communities, host workshops and other events to lure children into mathematics. We also want to get parents to start showing their kids that mathematics is nothing to be scared of. It is part of our daily lives,” Dr Motlhabane said.

Village Development Committee chairperson Nkeke Motshine said at the gathering that they were happy that students at the institution never showed any rowdy behaviour.

Kgosi Cletta Rantabe expressed the same sentiments saying the tribal administration has not registered any cases involving students or staff from the institution.

He implored the students to refrain from the use of drugs and alcohol saying there would be plenty of time for “nice time”.
