The soldiers, who struggled in the last few games, were merciless on Saturday despite fielding several rookie players in their side. It took them three runs for them to get their first run.

Vikings had opened the scoring early in the bottom one inning courtesy of a homer by Gomolemo Tshelametse.

BDF could not draw level when it was their turn to bat in the top two inning.

They got back into the game in the top three inning when Josphat Saakane scored their first run after a Kabo Matlho single-base hit to outfield.

Vikings were not able to get back into the lead in the bottom of that inning with BDF tightening their defence.

The top four was their breakthrough inning with Obusitswe Lekgothu, Neo Mngqibisa and Kagiso Mogale scoring three successive runs off a Saakane three-base hit. Lekgothu had just returned from an injury that kept him on the sidelines last weekend.

Saakane went on to score another run after rookie Royals Moyambuya’s two-base hit to centre field.

Moyambuya, a newcomer in the BDF senior team, went on to increase their tally after Matlho’s hit.

Trailing 5-1, Vikings looked a little down in the bottom four inning and struggled to bat well.

The only positive thing they did was a Lame Motswagole home run that reduced the margin to 5-2. But their opponents turned on the heat in the top five inning, sealing their win with 12 runs.

They brought in Patrick Monaesi in the top five inning and he immediately got his name of the score sheet after being set up by Mosarwa Moatlhodi, who had also come in as a substitute.

Moatlhodi then added another run after a Mngqabisi hit set him up for a run.

BDF’s star player, Lekgothu, was back again with another run after Archie Seetapele’s three-base hit. While at third base, Mogale’s home run saw Seetapele, another newcomer in the BDF side, complete a run. Lekgothu and Obonnetse Makala also scored from that homer.

Vikings managed to squeeze another run in the bottom five inning after Mmoloki Modimoosi stole a base and completed their third run of the game.

Lekgothu said the win was important as they wanted to get their readiness for the Easter tournament after struggling towards the end of the league campaign.

“We obviously wanted to end things in style. We needed to see if we are ready for another challenge,” he said.
