Seokemong targets upset at Jwaneng Open

Seokemong showed his intention of bagging the championship after his brilliant performance at the recent North West Open tournament in South Africa where he shot 78/81. Pearmain on the other hand shot 81/81, missing the half way cut.

Jwaneng Open will be divided into four categories being the Championship Division (handicap 0-7), A Division (handicap 8-15), B Division (handicap 16-24) and the Ladies Division (0-30).

Botswana Golf Union (BGU) secretary general, Mpho Kelosiwang told Mmegi Sport that the Championship will be played over 54 holes and 36 holes for the A, B and Ladies Divisions.  He said the tournament is expected to attract over 80 participants from within Botswana, the majority of whom will be from Jwaneng.

“The tournament has received a P30, 000 sponsorship from Puma Energy Botswana. The company has been given naming rights for the tournament,” said Kelosiwang.

Puma also sponsors the Botswana Closed, which is played in Orapa and the Central Open Golf Championships to be played in Selebi-Phikwe in June.

Kelosiwang said they believe that the partnership will continue to grow and improve the quality of golf in the country.

The tournament is one of the four World Amateur Golf Rankings events in Botswana and contributes significant points to the Botswana Golf Union Order of Merit. Kelosiwang said the tournament also serves as part of the Windhoek Lager Africa Golf Championship qualifier.

He said that for the first time this year, the Jwaneng Open will include women. The decision was taken after BGU had consultation with the Botswana Ladies Golf Union to open all their events, except Botswana Open, to women golfers.

Kelosiwang said they believe that this will further enhance golf’s unique selling point as a family sport. He said the move is also aimed at improving the women’s game.
