Karate dominates BNSC awards nominees

Moroko who has had a bright year seems to have an edge in the contest. She won gold at the Confederation of School Sport Associations of Southern Africa (COSSASA) games and the International Schools World Championships in Czech Republic where she was crowned the most valuable performer.

Swimming’s David van Der Cloff, Innocent Tidimane of tennis and karate wonder kid, Khaya Groth will battle it out in the junior male sports person of the year award.

Groth is the front-runner having won four gold in the past year. His first medal was at the Hayashi-Ha World Championships in Malaysia. 

The other medals came from the Zone V Championships in Namibia and the Gaborone Open.

Botswana Athletics Association (BAA), which has traditionally done well, has one nominee in the awards. Amantle Montsho contests in the sports woman of the year category where she faces Boikhutso Mudongo of chess and Thato Malunga of karate. Montsho has won the award for three consecutive years. She won the Diamond League in the year under review and is favoured to walk away with the award. In the administrator of the year category, Botswana Netball Association (BONA) president, Tebogo Lebotse is up against Million Masumbika of karate and boxing’s Michael Moroka. Karate’s Moses Jones is favoured to win the sportsman of the year award ahead of Oteng Oteng of boxing and squash’s Alister Walker.

The awards will be held at the Gaborone International Convention Centre (GICC) on April 26 under the theme ‘Botswana is rising’.
