“The clubs in Maruapula and Ext 10 in particular are a public nuisance and efforts should be made for their relocation to the outskirts of the city. There have been high incidents of robbery, rape, murder and petty theft reported by residents in such areas,” said Nkaigwa.

He said that the council should expedite the process of outsourcing some of the recreational parks to the private sector for promotion of recreation in the city. The mayor said that the council challenges the government to provide spaces for establishment of nightclubs outside Gaborone. He said that there is also a need for the establishment of a national theatre in Gaborone to give residents more options for recreation.

“In our efforts to promote religion, there is a need for government to identity more land for churches to develop their worship temples. Most of the churches in the city do not have places of worship and there is need for government to help with such establishments. Churches play a bigger role in nurturing a positive behaviour and discipline in the society,” he added.

When commenting, Moselewapula ward councillor Ndiwaani Kenosi agreed with the mayor saying that nightclubs and church equally give residents sleepless nights as some churches hosts all night prayers. He called on the council to establish the laws that would protect club owners from illegal businesses outside their clubs.

Naledi South councillor Ntebaleng Modise pleaded with the council to give priority to churches saying that they have positively changed a lot of people lives.

Seabelo Thekiso lamented that some unruly customers relieve themselves anywhere at No Mathata Shopping complex leaving the mall flooded with urine.

“This has affected other businesses such as a nearby restaurants which have lost customers because of the unbearable smell of urine,” said Thekiso.
