Man whipped for assaulting ex-girlfriend

He admitted that he went to harass his ex-girlfriend Onalenna Dao at her workplace on March 1, 2014.  Dao who works at Cantina Bar in Extension 14 told the court that Monametsi came to intimidate her and during a heated argument, he started pushing her in the face and tried to strangle her.

Dao told the court that she escaped from Monametsi’s house after she realised that his jealousy would destroy her. She said that even though her unemployed ex-lover knew that she was a bartender, his jealousy was outrageous as he went to the bar to check every male customer she served.

She said the accused would harass the male customers asking them what they were saying to her. She stated that even though Monametsi was unemployed, he did not care if she lost her job as he locked her in the house one time and left with the key. Dao told the court that her employers were also tired of the ex-lover’s behaviour, as they had on many occasions tried to reconcile them.

In his defence, Monametsi said that Dao cheated on him and that after he confronted her about it, she fled from his house where they were cohabiting. Radipati gave him a two months suspended jail sentence for assault. She told him that it was disappointing to see a man his age beating up a woman. She said the accused did not have to be jealous because he knew that his ex-girlfriend works as a bartender and obviously serves many male customers. She said that she was frustrated that a man who was supposed to be a lover decided to assault his partner instead of protecting and giving her all the love she deserved. Radipati told Monametsi that he did not have any right to assault his ex-lover, as there are appropriate actions he could take to solve problems.

She said when a partner is no longer interested in a relationship, he should let go of her peacefully.
