This was evident last Friday when a large number of night crawlers came to President Hotel for the Masters of Old School.

The event managed not to only to attract the older generation, particularly those that came of age in the ‘80s, but also younger fans.

Although at first, the event started on a low key, as only a few people had turned up, but as the night wore on more and more people started filling up the place.  In no time a large crowd had already started to form.  Many were already on their feet showcasing their skills on the dance floor.

Dressed to impress, many came out in vintage clothing as they reminisced about days gone by.  Opening the deck was DJ Dolphus. The fresh looking DJ kept people on their toes, dancing to classic jams including songs by the late Tupac Shakur and Aaliyah that he played.

Following him and surely doing a great job in keeping up the pace was DJ Peter P.  Peter P turned up the heat as he switched and played smashing jams of old House and Kwaito music.  DJ Juicy raised the bar. He managed to convince those who looked as if they were already about to call it a night to stay a bit longer. The man who seemed popular with the women had many wishing the night were only beginning.

Towards the wee hours of morning legendary old School DJ Sid took to the decks.  He reminded the crowd why old music will never get outdated. Sidney ‘DJ Sid’ Baitsile took the crowd through a journey of old music of all genres from Hip pop to Kwaito.  As he closed his set, many were begging for more.

Speaking to Showbiz later on, Sid mentioned that the purpose of the event was to provide entertainment for grown ups as they have nowhere to party these days.

“Everywhere we go, there is always kids and as parents we do not want to party with our own kids so this event was to separate us from the under aged,” he said.

He added that although they expected a large turnout, they were still pleased with the crowd that came. “We had initially booked two large rooms for this event but we only managed to fill one room, but we are still happy as the response we got when we played showed that people were really enjoying themselves,” he said.

Sid mentioned that the reason why old jam DJs would forever rule the entertainment industry is that they do not specialise in genres.

“DJs these days specialise, which is not necessarily a bad idea.  But it can count against them as many people rather choose to attend a function where they will have one person entertaining them with different music rather than wait for the another DJ to play their favourite song.  So as oldies we cater for all,” he said.
