Gangsters Raid Nandos

The incident took place just a stone’s throw away from the Central Police Station which is also at the Main Mall but they did not react until way after the robbers had left the scene, when just one police officer was seen running around the  robbery area with a gun.

One of the customers said the robbers struck at about 9.30pm when he was waiting for a friend to pick him up. “I saw a man walking from the city council direction to Nandos, with his hands inside his boxers as if he had a gun.

The man was wearing jeans and his face was covered with a cap and a bandana,” he said.

The man entered Nandos and moments later, five others followed him in and ordered everyone to lie down.  Some of the thugs had knives while others wielded what looked like guns. One of the gangsters went to the till and demanded cash as his men frisked customers, taking laptops, cellphones and cash.  In the process one of the customers was injured after a robber kicked him in the head.

It is alleged that the thugs ransacked even the restaurant’s offices.  “While others were busy grabbing everything they could  lay their hands on, another five of the gangsters stood guard at the front of the restaurant,” a customers said. The thugs then fled in the direction of the city council where their get away cars were parked.

“I immediately got up and ran to Central Police Station and along the away, I came across a police officer armed with an AK 47 running towards the direction of the city council but by then, the suspects had gone,” said the victim.

The deputy commander at Central Police Station, Assistant Superintendent, Keoagile Tau said the incident came as a shock because it is the first time a robbery involved such a large group of gangsters.   “No one has been arrested in connection with the horrifying incident but we have dispatched teams to search for the robbers,” said Tau. The management of Nandos declined to comment about the incident and refereed The Monitor to the police.
